Okay, so this is a live archival album capturing Jimi’ s legendary May 30th, 1970 performance at the Berkeley Community Theater.

Can you talk about what we are going to hear when fans finally get to press play on this? Well, you get to hear the first show in its entirety as if you were there.

So some people were there.

They can be reminded of what it was like and those that weren’ t, well, just close your eyes and imagine that you’ re there, I love that.

So from an archival perspective, what was going through the band’ s mind when they were taking the stage that night?

Oh, well, I have no idea what was going through their mind, but I know for Jimi. It was really about people hearing his music and that’ s why he played it.

So I think for him, he was thinking more about what he was going to play, the unrest that was happening in our world, and Berkeley was right in the heart of it.

And so, you know, a lot of people were angry because they wanted to get in, and there was just a lot of unrest in our world.

And and so the songs were very, oh gosh, the songs were chosen, you know, very in a particular manner to try to speak to the people.

Yeah. And when you talk about the demand that night, I mean, when you search out footage from this night, people are breaking windows trying to get in.

we have a little excerpt we’ re going to play right now. I mean, I look up there and I see people on the roofs and stuff trying to break in.

It’ s really uncalled for. You know, it’ s it’ s like it doesn’ t make any sense.

Were they expecting that? I don’ t think so.

I know that during the show, Jimi does give a shout out to the Black Panthers because the Black Panthers were there trying to keep the peace and trying to calm people down.

Actually, can you talk about the title of this album, Magic Boy and what that meant for Jimi?

Well, you know, we were Eddie Kramer and John McDermott and myself. We were in the studio and we were listening to the tracks and we were remixing a lot of them.

And I hear Jimi say, I’ m just a magic boy. And I said, that’ s it. That’ s the title. Like he calls himself Magic Boy. And I think that he was full of magic.

He was full of mischief. He was fun, he was creative, he was a genius. And he brought magic to the world through his music. Yeah.

And there’ s so many tracks on this album that are just Jimi classics.

When you think of him, you think of fire, you think of Johnny B Goode, you think of Easy Rider, you think of Voodoo Child.

But there were songs that they played that night that had not been released yet. What is it like now when you listen back to those early recordings?

Well, you kind of see where Jimi was coming from musically and where he was going musically, and he wasn’ t done.

He was he would never play the same song the same way. And freedom was definitely one of the songs that he was working on at the time.

And so we see and hear different versions of freedom since then, and how he was really trying to talk to the people.

And so we saw the demand for him that night in the album that we’ re going to hear on Magic Boy.

But when he would come back home and play home venues in Seattle, what was the energy like that? What was that like for your family? Well, we couldn’ t get enough of Jimi.

Yeah, my mom would cook for days and it would be like Thanksgiving at home.

A lot of great eating, playing monopoly, having fun at the table.

We would have family forums in the living room because a lot of the cousins and aunts and uncles would come, and they’ d want to know what Jimi was doing on the road.

Fortunately for us, he would always call home, but they didn’ t get that, and Jimi always felt like he was missing out. Like on weddings or graduations or birth of a child.

So he felt like he was missing out as much as they were when we were at the Seattle Center. That was really a fun concert, but people had were going crazy.

I remember leaving in the limo and we were all in there, and I was really concerned because all these fans were like throwing themselves on the the car.

And I was like, the driver is going a little bit too fast. And, and Jimi just, you know, leaned forward and said, could you please just slow down?

He’ s very concerned about the people and I’ m worried my sister, she’ s a little scared back here that you’ re going to hit somebody. So that was very sweet.

He was always very sweet and kind hearted guy. You don’ t want anybody to get run over. It’ s a celebratory event.

So when when it comes to this album release, like why now? Why did you guys choose to put this together?

Well, this does mark the 60th anniversary of Jimi and his music.

And so we put out a new album about every 18 months or documentary. And so I just we thought that this was a good time, good timing.

I think in a lot of ways, our world is still experiencing turmoil. And the music does speak to today. It’ s timeless.

Also, I would like to say this I know this is about the album, but on November 21st we are doing an exhibit.

We’ re opening an exhibit at Mopop. It’ s called West Coast Seattle Boy, and it’ s about Jimi’ s time in Seattle from the time that he was born.

And there’ s a lot of artifacts, family artifacts.

So I think that all that is celebrating Jimi’ s life in music for the last six decades, and
